Let's start at the top. My reel came superbly packaged, and was protected extremely well for it’s journey to the UK. When you unbox the outer carton to reveal the reel's storage box, you already begin to see the quality. Heavy cardboard with custom foam insert to keep the reel nice and secure. It looks like it will last the lifetime of the music on your tape. Open the box and there it is, the best finish of any tape reel I have ever seen. I mean this thing is machine flat, and just oozes quality. You can see and feel that this product has been engineered by people who want to make the best. Stunning! So how does it fare with some tape on it! I hooked mine up to my Studer A810 and hit rewind. The micro machined surface on the NAB hub is superb, and helps with loading the tape. There’s no slipping and having to roll back and forth to get the tape to bite and not once have I failed to load the tape on my first try. Ingenious design! With other empty reels you can get slippage on high speed rewinding, and the tape moves front to back on the hub, which can damage the tape ultimately. With the RX though, there was none of that. Tapes load so much more quietly as well, again, a result of the flanges being dead flat and not wobbling around on a sub standard hub. Now I wasn’t expecting to see it, but the loaded RX reel tape was packed onto the flange flat, and I mean it was pancake fresh out of the box new tape flat!!!! Amazing, absolutely amazing. This in turn also means that when you’ve finished listening to the tape, although being loaded back on to a regular aluminium reel, this too is super flat. So the best possible condition for storing the tape!! This has all happened time and time again, whenever I listen to tape via my RX reel. I even think that I have heard a gain in output volume, now this might sound silly, but I seriously do. From the first listen I noticed it. Going back to other reels proves it. Is beauty only skin deep? Not in this case. I'll freely confess that I bought one of these based on looks. However, and it's a big however, its performance is the more beautiful aspect here. Yes, it has a killer finish but its extraordinarily well machined hub winds tape as smoothly as anything I've seen, to the point of probably improving the performance of many decks. And yes, it would probably be foolish to store all your tape on these, but you might be equally foolish to not have at least one of these on hand as a takeup. Hopefully this isn't too much of a rave but it really is that good.

I had bought a red carbon reel and wanted another one right away because I was so impressed the build workmanship that went into it. These reels are absolutely the top of the line and will not disappoint even the most discerning audiophile (like me). I just recently received the Black & Gold Vein one a few weeks ago and can't believe how it transforms my deck from good to great!

Just opened the box (wow, that's one nice case!) to my new reels. You can tell as soon as you pick them up that these are something special. The weight, balance, finish and quality are top notch. They clearly aren't the low price option, but the the value is unmistakable. I'll be picking up the red carbon finish next. Nice!

Love the build quality of these carbon fiber reels. Mine arrive very well balanced (much better than the aluminum take up reel I had been using), and the red reel looks so great on my RS-1500. I'm planning to buy another for my other machine.
