After a thorough and reasonable explanation and history lesson from Ichimonji, it would be understandable that it be easy to assume the knives are not super sharp out of the box, but it's for good reason. Reason being that they're less likely to get damaged during shipping, and we can shape the edge to our liking. It was easy for me to shape the edge to my liking, the grind was excellent, no low or high spots, just some time spent on the grits, and it has a new and sharp edge, it cuts better than any usuba I've owned or used. Would certainly recommend. The video in my review was after I sharpened it. The finishing stone was a Shiro Amakusa Est. 1500 grit (not a finishing stone, its my only JNAT) not totally scratchless but I still consider myself an amateur sharpening single bevels, the fact it was this easy to get what I call a 7/10 kasumi finish says something about the initial grind. Besides that, its unreasonably sharp. Like I felt zero resistance turning daikon radish, or even the cucumber.
