"health care" system and drug policy, making a medication like Lunesta difficult to obtain. In the United States, many prescribers are uncomfortable with any type of GABAergic hypnotic/soporific medication (i. e. any "sleeping pill" that acts on GABA receptors to induce sedation and deep sleep (sedative-hypnotic) by tranquilizing one's mental state (tranquilizer), quieting the chatter (anxiolytic), and often relaxing muscles. I also am a neurological patient, diagnosed with Tourette's Syndrome, which goes hand in hand with insomnia, sleeping problems, and most symptoms that GABAergic medications are well suited to treat. Tourette's is misunderstood by most -- the best known, most visible, loudest, perhaps disruptive, and most mocked symptoms are the motor and vocal tics, which very frequently make falling asleep a challenge. The root of all of these symptoms, however, is obsessive-compulsive anxiety (OCD). The "premonitory urge" is an internal restlessness or compulsive tension to release the tic -- that is fundamentally a form of obsessive-compulsive anxiety, and unsurprisingly makes falling asleep a challenge. 1-2mg of eszopiclone eases me into sleep, winds down internal anxieties, and gently relaxes my muscles.
